Introduction
The ViewSonic LS830 designed to project both close to the screen from a pedestal and mounted on a wall mount above the screen from a distance of just a few tens of centimeters. The ability to create a large image from a minimum distance from the screen eliminates viewers’ likelihood of casting a shadow on the screen, allowing them to located close to it (especially when mounted on a wall above the screen).
Appearance
It is an ultra-short throw projector, as their layout is more or less standard, be it a school-class projector or a high-end Sony gizmo. The ViewSonic LS830 case design tends to move away from the school and healthcare models with their purely functional design and white case. The ViewSonic LS830, with its pleasing lines, looks harmonious even at home, and sure it would look just as dignified in a museum. However, the manufacturer’s website indicates that the ViewSonic LS830 projector is intended primarily for business and education.
On the rear panel, which directed towards the viewer, we find two-way stereo speakers covered with a grid, that is, only 4 pieces, Which is very unusual for projectors in general. This model can install on a table in front of the screen, or installed permanently on a wall mount upside down. The ability to flip the logo seems to show us that a desktop installation is a desirable option. Indeed, at home in front of the screen, this ViewSonic LS830 projector looks very harmonious, which cannot say about white office projectors.
Short Throw Lens
The short-throw lens is interesting not only for business and educational institutions, but also for museums, and even for home use. For example, it removes any restrictions on the size of the room. The ViewSonic LS830 projector equipped with a laser phosphor light source that should significantly extend the device’s life without maintenance compared to lamp projectors. Nevertheless, this moment also increases the cost of the device itself, although, in the future, the resource of the light source can reach 20 thousand hours in eco-mode and 15 thousand in normal (maximum) mode. The manufacturer claims that the light source has a life of 20,000 hours in Eco Mode and 15,000 hours in Normal Power Mode. Of course, this in itself is an advantage. So, 20,000 hours corresponds to almost seven years of operation, 8 hours a day, 365 days a week.
Image Technology
As for the image, the ViewSonic LS830 projector provides 127 inches diagonal with a resolution of Full HD (1920×1080), and it is worth noting excellent focusing clarity and almost imperceptible pixel spacing. At this diagonal, the projector can use when viewing in the dark. The combination of sharpness and decent contrast gives the image an excellent volumetric effect when considering a variety of content, from football to movies. In Dynamic mode, the ViewSonic LS830 projector handles light exposure well, producing an image close to the original.
Speaking of color reproduction, the ViewSonic LS830’s image looks natural in Dynamic mode when illuminated indoors. Although this is a vivid mode, it took a while to find test images showing a noticeable inaccuracy in color casts with the naked eye. More specifically, bright red looks a little faded. When working in the dark, we still have a headroom of brightness and can quickly go into eco-mode, dropping the intensity down to 77%, yet keeping the headroom even for a 127-inch screen (in my case). In the dark in the ‘Film’ mode on real test images, color reproduction practically does not give noticeable deviations from the norm, even when compared side-by-side with a calibrated monitor.
Installation
The most important thing to awareness of when setting up ultra-short-throw projectors: no roll-up screens or collapsible screens on a tripod. The surface of the screen must be perfectly flat and well stretched. Otherwise, the slightest irregularities in the fabric will give strong picture distortion. The ViewSonic LS830 weighs about 10 kg, width – about 50 cm, so you can move it from room to room alone. In this case, the distance from the lens to the projector’s front edge is about 27 cm.
Speaker
The ViewSonic LS830 projector has built-in speakers, which one would like to call stereo speakers, only this pair produces mono sound. The speakers are two-way, and the ViewSonic LS830 projector can provide very high volumes without any signs of rattling and adequately reproduces the most popular ranges. There are three sound modes, ‘Standard,’ ‘Speech,’ and ‘Entertainment.’ The latter revives the low frequencies (low part of the mids), although there is no real bass. However, you can listen to dynamic music. The audio source is both HDMI and dedicated audio inputs (2x RCA and minijack), which should pair with their corresponding video source.
