Introduction
One of the biggest manufacturers of action cameras GoPro in 2016 released its first drone called Karma, which became the flagship of the company. This uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) is perfect for those who are just starting to engage in piloting. This small drone designed for amateur photo and video shooting. The model firmly occupies its niche in the middle price category, offering a good set of functions and additional options for a reasonable price.
Features & Appearance
Unlike most products released by the most famous brands, the GoPro Karma Core Drone has compact dimensions, folding beams, and a non-standard camera layout. The rest of the quad was given the standard features of the top drones with the Smart letter: auto take-off, auto-landing, hold-down, return home, etc. When combining a GoPro camera with this accessory, the owner can always capture high-quality photos and video material from the ground.
The quadrocopter made of lightweight ABS plastic in black and white. At first glance, the design looks very fragile, but tests have shown that the quadrocopter withstands substantial impacts and hard landing. The device has a small size, a model with folding beams, and a non-standard option for placing the action camera in front of the invention. According to the manufacturer, this will prevent the silhouettes of propellers from falling into the frame and capture more objects. The GoPro Karma landing gear is hidden under the body when folded. The button for starting the device to work located in the upper part, and the battery pack with charge indication located at the back. The drone’s rays have a slightly rounded shape; under them, there is an LED backlight to simplify drone control. Since there is no Headless Mode, the GoPro Karma sides marked in different colors.
Camera
Any of Hero 4, Hero 5, Session 5 cameras are compatible with the drone. The possible frame distortions excluded during shooting, including at the maximum flight speed of the GoPro Karma quadrocopter. When using the Hero 5 action camera, you can get high 4K frames at 30 fps. For shooting on the ground, the quadrocopter camera can mount on a proprietary monopod. Still, in this case, there may be problems with stabilization: when shooting a video at a quick step, it will swing slightly. Hero 5 is capable of taking 12 MP pictures in RAW format. A burst function of 30 frames is available. You can change the settings on the display of the action camera, even without using a smartphone.
Remote Controller & Functionality
The quadcopter remote control is very convenient to use. It is equipped with a built-in battery, ensuring its autonomous operation for 4 hours. It has one take-off, landing button, which also provides the return of the device home. To special software, customers of GoPro Karma Core Drone will be able to watch the video in real-time and control the current position of the action camera. The remote control with a built-in 720p touch screen made in the form factor of a small laptop. The duration of the remote control charge is approximately 2.5 hours. The significant omissions are the lack of a ‘follow me’ function, as well as the lack of obstacle recognition sensors. So, when shooting at low altitudes, there is a risk of collision of the device with a non-residential building or other objects. And for shooting a moving object, you will have to control the quadrocopter manually.
The model has four free photo and video modes:
1.) Orbit – the trajectory in a circle of a fixed point.
2.) Dronie – quadcopter selfie shooting mode.
3.) Cable Cam – shooting with movement along a specified path.
4.) Reveal – the mode of gradual removal of the quadrocopter from the object.
The GoPro Karma Core Drone equipped with the following features:
1.) automatic take-off;
2.) automatic landing;
3.) height retention;
4.) return home.
Battery
The capacity of the lithium-polymer battery 5100mAh allows the quadrocopter to be in the air for about 20 minutes. It is not the highest indicator of autonomy among similar uncrewed aerial vehicles.
Motors
The GoPro Karma Core Drone provides four brushless motors whose power will be enough to reach a speed of of56 km/h. The device’s wind resistance does not exceed 10km/h; therefore, during bad weather, the drone should not be launched. The quadrocopter motors work very quietly; the noise generated from them is much smaller.
