Introduction

The new tablet becomes a competitor to the iPad Air and is perceived as a new version of it, and not as a separate line. And now, we get a new iPad Pro with a 10.5-inch screen. It is already the third screen format in the iPad Pro line and the fourth among all iPads. Moreover, three-screen options exist simultaneously. With the iPhone, however, the story is entirely similar. Still, SE has never been an equivalent alternative to the main flagship – it was precisely that inexpensive mini-iPhone (by modern standards), released preferably once.

Design

In the phrase of design, the new Apple iPad Pro 10.5-inch hasn’t fundamentally changed anything – the same rounded edges, thinner bezels along the long sides, and wider ones, along with the short ones, so that the primary use case can still be considered landscape mode, not portrait. But there are also differences from the iPad Pro 9.7.

The frames as a whole have become narrower (according to Apple – by 40%), so despite the noticeably larger screen diagonal (by 20% compared to 9.7 ″), the overall dimensions of the tablet have increased slightly – 1 cm long and less than half a centimeter wide. The thickness remained the same – 6.1 mm, the weight increased as expected, but insignificantly – from 437 g to 469 g (for versions without an LTE module). The placement of the buttons on the new Apple iPad Pro 10.5-inch is the same as on the previous model; from the cosmetic differences, one can note the increased module of the primary camera and the changed number of holes for the speakers – one pair has one more of them, the other, on the contrary, less.

Strictly speaking, taking photos/videos using a tablet is bad manners. However, unfortunately, a relatively large number of users like it, so we cannot ignore this aspect. So, the Apple iPad Pro 10.5-inch has a 12-megapixel primary camera with f / 1.8 aperture (borrowed from the iPhone 7), capable of shooting 4K video @ 30fps, and a 7-megapixel front camera with support for 1080p video (iPad Pro 9.7 ″ Frontal characteristics were more superficial – 5 megapixels and 720p). As expected, the pictures are excellent – in ideal conditions of bright daylight, we see great details, almost no noise, natural colors, and an excellent dynamic range. When conditions deteriorate, the point noticeably reduced, and noise appears, but the images’ quality remains at an altitude and is noticeably better than most modern smartphones.

The screen diagonal is, of course, 10.5 ″, the resolution has slightly increased – up to 2224×1668 pixels (this was done obviously to preserve the traditional pixel density of 264 PPI). As with the previous generation, there is also a system for automatic white balance correction depending on the type of ambient light (TrueTone) – for example, in a room with a conventional incandescent lamp, the image ‘warms up’ so as not to appear too blue. Something similar, only working on a schedule, is available on Windows PCs in the form of third-party applications (and more recently at the system level). Still, TrueTone operates on the same principle as auto-brightness, reacting within literally a couple of seconds to external lighting changes.

The new Apple iPad Pro 10.5-inch also support a wide color gamut that matches the DCI-P3 color space designed for digital cinema use. The screen is very bright (maximum brightness – 436 cd / m²) and contrast (~ 1200: 1), with rich, vivid colors and maximum viewing angles. With TrueTone turned off, the color temperature almost ideally corresponds to the standard 6500K. The gamma value is also linear across the entire brightness range and minimally differs from the 2.2 standard – we can say that the screen of the Apple iPad Pro 10.5-inch is noticeably better than many consumer-level desktop monitors in terms of essential characteristics.

The proMotion has become a new display function for the second-generation iPad Pro – under the name, which is not the most convenient for searching on Google, there is nothing more than an adaptive screen refresh rate. In the new Apple iPad Pro 10.5-inch, this parameter is not fixed at 60 Hz, as before, but can change depending on what is happening on the screen and rise to 120 Hz. As a result, the smoothness of turning screens, scrolling pages, switching between applications turns out to be fantastic. Perhaps, after the increased screen size, this is the second most crucial innovation in the second generation of iPad Pro, if not the first.
