Introduction
Recently, Samsung at the MWC 2017 showed the public its new creation – the Samsung Galaxy Book 12-inch. As the name implies, the device has a 12-inch diagonal with a screen resolution of 2160×1440 pixels. The novelty differs from most competitors in that the docking keyboard and stylus already include in the package, and you don’t have to buy them separately. Other advantages of the device are the latest generation chip, modern interfaces, compact size, and lightweight.
Design
The manufacturer did not rely on the appearance – the tablet looks quite ordinary. The back panel is made from a single aluminum piece and has a slightly rough to the touch surface. Due to the roughness, the device does not strive to slip out of the hands. In addition, fingerprints and dust are less noticeable in such a texture. The middle of the panel is the company logo, a little higher – the primary camera lens. At the very top, there is a plastic insert that hides the antennas.
The front part completely covers with glass. Relatively thick bezels surround the screen by modern standards. On the upper edge, there is a front camera, opposite it is another small brand logo. The interfaces are relatively evenly spaced, except for the bottom end – it is empty. The docking keyboard that comes with the tablet attaches via a magnetic connector. The design is stable on a hard flat surface, but you will have to maneuver seriously to keep it on your knees – this is frankly inconvenient. The display weighs 754 g and is comfortable to hold. It should admit that the new item’s build quality is excellent: the details are in their places, there are no gaps, backlashes, or deflections.
Keyboard & Touchpad
The keyboard, which is also a cover, attaches to the tablet in one motion. In work, the body transforms into a stand, which allows you to set three screen positions. The keyboard does not need a separate power supply. The island-type keyboard unit is very similar to a standard laptop keyboard up to 15.6 inches. There is no digital block, and the arrows place very compactly. It is quite difficult to hit them. The keyboard buttons are square and spaced from each other for comfortable touch typing. Illumination provides for night owls. The essential travel is average, useful feedback is felt. It is convenient to type, even with prolonged typing, your hands do not get tired. The location of frequently used buttons is quite right: the Enter key is single-row; under it, there is an elongated Shift.
Display, Sound & Webcam
The Samsung Galaxy Book 12-inch screen has a high resolution of 2160×1440 pixels, while the density per inch is 216 PPI. The display characterizes by high brightness and contrast, and the black level is also almost reference. The AdobeRGB color gamut reaches 99%, which is extremely important for artists and designers. The Super AMOLED sensor is a massive bonus as it delivers rich, vibrant, and lifelike image colors. The viewing angles are wide and won’t invert from any angle. The screen is glossy, but its contents remain readable even in direct sunlight due to a reasonable margin of brightness. The display sensor works instantly and supports up to 10 simultaneous touches.
The package includes an S Pen with a 0.7 mm tip. The digital pen supports up to 4096 levels of pressure and significantly expands the use of your tablet. The acoustic side of the device also did not disappoint. Although there is not enough bass, the sound does not distort at maximum volume. In general, the sound quality is sufficient for watching movies or listening to music in the background. The front camera resolution is 5 megapixels. You also use it to take a selfie or chat on Skype. For photography, the rear camera is more suitable, the resolution of which is 13 megapixels. It has autofocus and takes good pictures. True, at dusk, they become less clear and sharp.
Performance
The Samsung Galaxy Book 12-inch SM-W720 runs Windows 10 Home 64-bit. The Intel Core i5-7200U chip of the Kaby Lake architecture has two cores and overclock from 2.5 to 3.1 GHz. The processor supports the technology of multi-threading Hyper-Threading, which allows processing up to four threads simultaneously. The CPU has 3 MB of L3 cache, is made according to the 14 nm process technology standards, and consumes up to 15 W of electricity. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 operates in the 300-1000 MHz frequency range (Boost). It supports DirectX 12 and is suitable for handling undemanding tasks: surfing the web, launching applications like Word, Excel, Photoshop, playing audio/video, etc. The RAM of the tablet is 4 GB out of the maximum 8 GB. A fast 128 GB SSD provides for storing content.
Ports & Communications
On top of the Samsung Galaxy Book 12-inch is a volume rocker and a power button. They rise above the surface and quickly grope blindly. On the left side, there is a slot for microSD memory cards. On the opposite side are two universal USB Type-C ports and a 3.5mm headphone output. There are only two sensors in the tablet: an accelerometer and a light sensor. For wireless access to the network, Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac is provided, for data exchange with other devices – Bluetooth 4.1, for navigation – GPS.
Battery
The tablet has a 5070 mAh (39 Wh) Li-ion battery. Autonomy results do not break records, yet the bright screen with high resolution and the filling of the latest generation affect. More precisely, the device will work for about 5 hours in web surfing mode, in mixed mode – no more than 7 hours. Demanding tasks like games will discharge the tablet in about 2-2.5 hours. In general, if you plan to use the device all day long, take a charger with you.
