Introduction

Parrot Mambo Fly is a quadrocopter, which the developers have assembled specifically for those who like competition, racing and at the same time the opportunity to shoot. For beginners, this model is considered the most optimal, since one of the equipment options for the device has a video camera with which you can broadcast live video.

Sensors & Appearance

Built-in inertial-measuring unit for evaluating speed, incline and contact with an obstacle (which includes a 3-axis accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope). Vertical stabilization: Ultrasonic sensor (active at a height of up to 4 meters) + barometer. Horizontal stabilization and speed measurement: vertical 0.3MP camera 60 fps (next to the ultrasonic sensor).

The design and overall dimensions of the device allow this quadrocopter to be classified as a mini-drone. In appearance, the device resembles a small bug with two green eyes. Made by Parrot Mambo in black and white. The case of the device is made of polypropylene and polyamide. A thorough review of the quadrocopter made it possible to see that the entire rear of it is a compartment for the battery. To the compartment, there is a charge connector, as well as contacts to which accessories are attached. Four legs extend from the central part at the ends of which are the engine compartments.

They are slightly lowered and at the same time serve as the chassis. At the bottom of the Parrot Mambo Fly housing is an ultrasonic height meter, as well as a vertical optical system lens. On top of the fuselage, you can mount video equipment. The updated Parrot Minidrone Mambo FPV RTF 2.4G model does not have a gun and a capture, but is equipped with an FPV camera that shoots 720p video. Also, the new quadrocopter is equipped with a Cockpitglasses 2 video headset, a Parrot Flypad transmitter and a more capacious battery (660mAh compared to 550mAh).

Flight Control

The quadcopter is controlled in three ways. One of the methods is using a particular application through any smartphone that has Bluetooth. To do this, you need to download the FreeFlight Mini application on Google Play for or on iOS. The second way to control is with the Flaypad. It is also possible to use remote control and a smartphone together. Having made an overview of all the capabilities of controlling the aircraft, it can be noted that remote control is more profitable in terms of control radius. Through the remote control, this radius reaches 60meters, while through the smartphone – 30meters.

Using the transmitter, the distance can be increased to 100meters. The remote control is not included, it must be purchased separately. There is another way to control Parrot Mambo – this is when in addition to the remote control, a smartphone is taken. To do this, a smartphone is mounted on a unique holder, this design is used for FPV flights, as well as for recording video material. The only requirement is that the smartphone should not exceed 78mm in width and 9.8mm in size. The remote control is powered by its own battery, which lasts for 6 hours. It takes up to two hours to recharge.

Software & Functionality

The software is updatable. The new firmware version is installed via Bluetooth connection using a smartphone and the FreeFlight Mini application. The update procedure is not quick, but it will not cause any difficulties. The quadcopter has three levels of difficulty, with which you can easily master the skills of aerobatics:

1.) Easy mode – At this level, an autopilot operates that will correct pilot errors.

2.) Drift mode – Horizontal control is disabled.

3.) Racing mode – Autopilot is completely disabled.

In Parrot Mambo Fly programmed functions with which to control the drone. This is a function of auto take-off and landing, hovering in one position in flight, flips, as well as take-off from a hand. The last function is relevant in competitions. To activate it, you need to click on the appropriate button and toss the drone. The device will freeze in flight, waiting for the next pilot commands. The Parrot Mambo simple quadrocopter (not FPV) comes with a special CANNON controlled mechanism, which is designed for shooting balls at a distance of up to 2 meters. In one store there are 6 balls that can shoot every 1.5 seconds. In addition, the quadrocopter has another Grabber power mechanism, which allows the device to lift objects up to 4 grams. Optical and ultrasonic sensors, which are located on the lower part of the body, are responsible for holding the height.

Camera & Video Headset

The video equipment is attached to the upper part of the Parrot Minidrone Mambo FPV housing on a special Smart Block mount. The camera itself is not heavy, its weight leaves 10 grams. The device’s HD camera is equipped with a transmitter, as well as a microSD card slot. The quadrocopter can transmit a video picture and broadcast live in 720p quality. Also, if shooting is from the first person, the image is slightly behind the real picture. In addition, the camera lens has a viewing angle of 120 degrees.

The Cockpitglasses 2 VR headset is the most straightforward optical device that includes a mask with two lenses, a headband and a special compartment for installing the smartphone. The gap between the lenses is adjustable, and the optics provide a viewing angle of 96 degrees. The criterion for using such a headset is the presence of a smartphone, the diagonal of which ranges from 4.5 to 6 inches. This video headset is suitable for racing. Only as a transmitter is it better to use the Flaypad.

Battery & Charging

The new Parrot Minidrone Mambo FPV quadrocopter is equipped with an updated battery with a capacity of 660mAh (the previous model was equipped with a 550mAh battery). Due to this improvement, the aircraft increased its flight time to 10 minutes (versus 9 minutes). To charge the battery, the developers recommend using a special charger that can charge up to three batteries at the same time. A full charge will take 25 minutes. This charger not included. It must be purchased separately.

Motors

The developers of the model made it so that the Parrot Mambo motor harmoniously combines power and low weight. The design is a combination of four collector motors and elastic propellers with two blades. The size of one motor is 8.5 by 20mm. Such engines were developed specifically for this drone series and had high efficiency.
